Bobcats 0 - 27 Dreadnoughts

The opening game of the 2018 season had familiar feel a face off against the Bobcats Div 2 South rivals the Portsmouth Dreadnoughts. A team whom have gone from strength to strength every season and having ended last season with a play-off run the Bobcats knew that they had a tough game ahead of them.

The game did not start as well as the Bobcats would have liked, going 3 and out on the first drive is not the ideal start any football team is looking for. Having to give the ball back to the Dreadnoughts whom meticulously made their way down the field against a Bobcats defense whom were still warming up to game speed. They ended their 1st drive with a touchdown pass to their wide receiver whom took the play well. A missed extra point, the game was now 0-6.

With the ball back in Bobcats possession the offense continued to struggle to get going and had to punt the ball back again. The Bobcats defense now having found their feet started to cause the Dreadnoughts offence issues stopping their methodical play on several occasions. This being a game of two well drilled defenses the ball was punted back and forth a few times due both offenses efforts being stopped.

This would have to eventually break and the Bobcats offence were the first to do so, a botched snap resulted in the Dreadnoughts recovering the ball in excellent field position. The Dreadnoughts were on this occasion able to run the ball in from short yardage, for their second touchdown of the day and convert their extra point making the score 0-13.

The Bobcats offence had some good play before half time but were unable to capitalize before the first half whistle was blown leaving the Bobcats trailing at the half.

The Bobcats defense were now playing hot and forcing another stop and giving the ball back to the offence with good field position. This momentum carried over to the offence whom with some hard-running plays started to now move the ball well. Unfortunately, the momentum was slowed due to a few penalties and when the Bobcats threw an interception the Dreadnoughts had good field position. Which they took full advantage of and they squeezed out their second passing touchdown of the day, missing the extra point the score now 0-19.

The game remained defensive dominate for most part where neither the Bobcats offence nor Dreadnoughts offence could get the ball moving. In the dying minutes the Dreadnoughts were able to force a fumble deep in Bobcats territory and score the final touchdown of the day.

A game dominated by two excellent defenses unfortunately finished with the Bobcats losing their opener 0-27. The Bobcats are now looking ahead to their next game in 3 weeks' time against the Hastings Conquerors who are next to make their way down to Bournemouth.
