Bobcats 8 - 14 Dreadnoughts

The Bournemouth Bobcats opened their 2017 campaign at home against the Portsmouth Dreadnoughts. The match was a defensive heavy affair with both sides playing some strong football, the first quarter went for most part score-less.

With some big pass plays completed by the Bobcats and yards adding up they just could not find the end zone and were forced to punt on their first few drives.

The Dreadnoughts broke the dead-lock late in the first half with a long pass from their quarterback which was hauled in and forced into the end zone by a determined receiver. The extra two-point attempt failed to convert and the first quarter ended 0-6.

At the start of the second quarter the Bobcats offence took the field but still failed to find the spark and clean execution that they possessed for most part of last season resulting in unfortunate turnovers in favour of the Dreadnoughts. But late into the second quarter the Bobcats began to move the ball well on the ground, and a crucial 3rd down conversion thrown by QB Macdonald #1 to receiver Griffith #89 in double coverage set up their scoring drive.

Another well executed pass by QB Macdonald #1 to receiver Moreno #8 in the end zone resulted in the Bobcats touchdown leaving the score at half time 6-6 and the game well in the balance.

The third quarter was very much defensive from both sides holding strong, tackling well and keeping the offensive units to several 3 and outs.

The fourth quarter started very much in the same manor but due to a few penalties the Dreadnoughts found themselves in great field position to take the lead. In which they duly delivered another well taken catch by the Dreadnoughts receiver and determination to make the end zone gave the Dreadnoughts their second touchdown of the game, with the two point conversion successful the game was now 6-14.

The game was drawing to an end and with the Bobcats offence still struggling to find its feet was kept in the game by strong defensive play. A punt deep in Dreadnoughts territory was blocked by linebacker Ford #55 out the back of the end zone resulting in a safety making the score 8-14.

Energised by the superb defensive play the Bobcats sideline was roaring, but the enthusiasm was short lived as with so little time left on the clock the Bobcats were forced to play pass heavy football. Unfortunately this ended in a turnover on downs as the Bobcats failed to find that all crucial 1st down, the Dreadnoughts took a few knees to seal the victory.

With the first game ending in defeat for the Bobcats (FINAL SCORE: 8-14) moving our season to 0-1, the Bobcats are taking the positives from their loss and focus has now turned immediately to the next game the Hasting Conquerors.

Congratulations to game MVP’s: Offensive MVP: Receiver - Nacho Moreno Defensive MVP: Linebacker - Sam Williams
